How to Create a USDT TRC20 Wallet: Step by Step in TronLink, Trust Wallet and Telegram
A step-by-step guide to creating a USDT TRC20 wallet: back up the seed phrase, get your T-address, activate it, and get ready for your first transfer without burning extra TRX.
Short answer: to create a USDT TRC20 wallet, install a wallet that supports the TRON network (for example, TronLink or Trust Wallet), tap "Create wallet", write the seed phrase down on paper, and copy the address that starts with the letter T. That is your USDT TRC-20 address. There is no separate "USDT wallet": one TRON address holds TRX and every TRC-20 token. To send USDT later, the address has to be activated and have energy or TRX for network fees.
TRC20 wallet: what it really is
A blockchain wallet is not a bank account. It is a key pair. The public address is derived mathematically from the private key; the TRON network keeps track of balances by address, and the wallet app simply stores your key and signs transfers with it. So "creating a wallet" means generating a new key on your own device. Nothing is registered on the network at that moment.
USDT on TRON is a TRC-20 token, and its balances live in the Tether smart contract. The contract does not care which app you use: any TRON address can hold USDT, TRX and other tokens at the same time. When an exchange or a counterparty asks for your "USDT TRC20 address", they need a regular TRON address: 34 characters, starting with a capital T.
The practical takeaway: if you already have a TRON address in TronLink, Trust Wallet or a hardware wallet, you do not need anything extra for USDT. Creating a new TRC20 wallet makes sense when you are starting from scratch, want to separate business and personal funds, or your old address has been exposed.
Which TRC20 wallet to choose: three types
- Non-custodial app (TronLink, Trust Wallet and others with TRON support). Only you hold the key, and access is restored with the seed phrase. Full control, and full responsibility for the backup.
- Hardware wallet. The key lives on a separate device and never leaves it; it connects through a wallet app. A sensible choice for larger amounts.
- Custodial wallet: an exchange or a wallet bot in Telegram. The service issues the address and holds the keys. Convenient, no seed phrase, but access to your money depends on the service's rules, limits and checks.
We compared specific apps by usability, TRON resource support and security in our guide to the best wallet for USDT TRC-20. Below are the creation steps themselves.
How to create a USDT TRC20 wallet in TronLink: step by step
- Download TronLink only from the official app store or via the link on its official website. Check the developer and the install count: fake wallets with look-alike icons regularly show up in ads and search results.
- Tap "Create wallet" and set a password. This password protects the app on that specific device; it does not restore the wallet on another phone.
- The app shows a seed phrase (mnemonic): a set of English words. Copy them onto paper in exact order. Do not take a screenshot or save them in notes, cloud storage or a messenger.
- Confirm the phrase: the app asks you to pick the words in the right order. This checks that your copy has no mistakes.
- Copy the address from the home screen: it starts with T and is 34 characters long. It is your address for both TRX and USDT TRC-20.
- Make sure USDT is in your asset list. If you add the token manually, look for the official Tether USDT and verify the contract address, not just the name.
Create a TRC20 address in Trust Wallet
Trust Wallet is multi-chain, and that is the main trap. After creating the wallet and backing up the seed phrase, search the asset list for USDT marked with the TRON (TRC20) network. Trust Wallet has USDT versions on several networks, and their addresses differ: a TRON address starts with T, while Ethereum and BNB Chain addresses start with 0x. Tap "Receive" on USDT on TRON; the address shown is your USDT TRC20 address.
USDT TRC20 wallet in Telegram
Telegram has custodial wallet bots that give you a deposit address for USDT on the TRON network. This is the fastest way to get a wallet: there is no seed phrase, and the address appears once you choose the coin and network. The flip side is that the service holds the keys, and limits, checks and withdrawal fees are set by its rules.
Pick the network carefully when you deposit. Telegram wallets often offer USDT on several networks, for example TON and TRON. A TON address and a TRON address are different things, and sending USDT TRC20 to an address on another network is a common way to lose funds. For TRC-20 you need an address that starts with T.
Any bot or "support agent" asking for your seed phrase or private key is a scammer. Legitimate services do not need your keys: for example, Overtron delegates energy to your address, and you never hand over keys.
TRC20 wallet activation: why a new address does not exist on-chain yet
A freshly created address exists only in your app. The TRON network learns about it after the first incoming transfer of TRX or a TRC-10 token: that transfer activates the account, and the network charges the sender about 1 TRX for creating it. Before activation the address can still receive USDT TRC-20, since the tokens are recorded in the contract, but you cannot send them on without activation and resources.
The easiest way to activate an address is to receive a small amount of TRX: from an exchange, a friend, or another wallet of yours. If you have no TRX at hand, the Overtron bot has a wallet activation button.
The mechanics, timing and common questions are covered in detail in our article on how to activate a new TRON wallet. You can check whether an address is activated on the Tronscan explorer: an activated account shows its creation date.
What you need to send USDT from a new wallet
Receiving USDT costs the recipient nothing. The sender always pays, and pays not in USDT but in TRON network resources. Sending USDT to an address that already holds USDT uses about 65,000 energy; to an empty address, about 131,000. If the wallet has no energy, the network burns TRX: roughly 6.5 TRX for a regular transfer and about 13 TRX for a transfer to an empty address. A transfer also uses about 345–360 bandwidth, and an activated address gets 600 free bandwidth per day.
- Keep TRX in the wallet and pay by burning every time. Simple, but the most expensive option.
- Stake your own TRX to get energy. Cost-effective at high volume, but it locks up capital.
- Rent energy for the number of transfers you need. Energy is delegated to your address for a while, and no keys are shared.
If you send only a few transfers or send them irregularly, renting is the most convenient route: you can buy TRON energy for one, two or four transfers; the price depends on the market and is shown before you pay.
Common mistakes when creating a TRC20 wallet
- Seed phrase stored in a screenshot, cloud or chat. That is the first thing phone malware looks for.
- App downloaded from an ad link. A fake wallet sends your seed phrase to attackers right after you create it.
- USDT selected on the wrong network: a 0x address instead of a T address. A transfer from TRON will not arrive there.
- Expecting to send USDT without TRX or energy. The wallet will show an insufficient-resources error, or the transfer will fail.
- Address copied from transaction history. Scammers send "dust" from look-alike addresses, hoping you will copy theirs instead of yours.
- Large amounts kept in a custodial wallet. The service may restrict withdrawals or request verification at the worst possible moment.
Address swapping through dust transfers is explained in detail in our article on USDT address poisoning.
Checklist before you receive USDT for the first time
- The seed phrase is written on paper, verified, and stored where nobody else can see it.
- The address starts with T, is 34 characters long, and was copied from the wallet's home screen.
- Receive a small test amount first and confirm it shows up both in the wallet and on Tronscan.
- The address is activated: it has received at least one incoming TRX transfer.
- You have energy or a TRX reserve for burning before you send anything out.
The address is public, the seed phrase is secret. Share the address with anyone; share the seed phrase with no one, "support" included.
Once the wallet is ready, you can send USDT without burning extra TRX. In the Overtron bot you can activate a new address with one button and rent energy for the number of transfers you need, without sharing your keys.

How do I create a USDT TRC20 wallet on my phone?
Install TronLink or Trust Wallet from the official app store, choose "Create wallet", write down the seed phrase and copy the address that starts with T. In Trust Wallet, make sure you pick USDT on the TRON network.
Do I need a separate wallet for USDT if I already have a TRX wallet?
No. Any TRON address accepts both TRX and USDT TRC-20. In one wallet, the TRX address and the USDT address are the same.
Can I create a TRC20 wallet in Telegram?
Yes, through custodial wallet bots that give you a USDT address on the TRON network. The service holds the keys. When depositing, check that TRON (TRC20) is selected, not TON or another network.
Why did USDT arrive in my new wallet but I can't send it?
Sending requires an activated address and network resources: energy or TRX to burn. Receive a little TRX, or activate the address and rent energy.
How much does TRC20 wallet activation cost?
The network charges about 1 TRX to whoever first sends TRX or a TRC-10 token to the new address. Activation costs the recipient nothing.
How do I find my USDT TRC20 wallet address?
Open the wallet and tap "Receive" on USDT on the TRON network. The address starts with T and has 34 characters. Copy it from the wallet, not from transaction history.
What happens if I lose my seed phrase?
If the app is deleted or the phone is lost, a non-custodial wallet cannot be restored without the seed phrase. The funds stay on the address, but you lose access to them.
Can I send USDT TRC20 to an address starting with 0x?
No. A 0x address belongs to Ethereum, BNB Chain and similar networks. USDT TRC20 needs a TRON address starting with T.
